 I recently faced a big decision: Should I buy a new or used car?

I no longer needed a minivan, and the repair costs were starting to add up- quickly reaching into the thousands. It was time for a replacement.

I knew I wanted a Toyota Rav4 Hybrid for two main reasons:

• Toyota's reputation for reliability.
• Better gas mileage.

In the past, buying used was always the right choice for me. 

I purchased my 2014 Toyota Sienna in 2017, paid it off in 2019, and then enjoyed six years without a car payment. That decision helped make paying for my kids' college tuition possible. 

Naturally, I assumed I would do the same thing again! 

Why Buying a Used Car Is Harder in 2025

 Since 2020, the car buying market has changed considerably.  

It is now much harder to find a reliable used car at a meaningful discount, especially with high-demand vehicles like the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid.

When I searched for a used Rav4 Hybrid:

• Most were only about $2,000 cheaper than new. Some were as expensive as new!
• Many had 40,000+ miles.
• Inventory was extremely limited in the Buffalo, NY area.

Meanwhile, you're barely saving money.

Why the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid Is Different

The Toyota Rav4 Hybrid:

• Is known for long-term reliability.
• Holds its value extremely well. 

In fact, it may only lose about 30% of its value after 5 years.

-That's great if you own one - but frustrating when you're trying to buy used.

Real Cost Comparison: New vs Used

A new Toyota Rav4 Hybrid:

• Depreciates roughly $14,000 over 5 years.

So:

• If someone else already absorbed that loss -> buy used
• If they didn't (prices still high) -> buy new

My Final Decision: Buying New

After doing the research, I decided to buy a new 2025 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid XLE (without the convenience package).

Here's why: 

• Used models were barely cheaper.
• I plan to keep the vehicle 10+ years.
• I wanted full warranty and reliability.

How I Saved Money Buying New

Even buying new, I still looked for ways to save.

• Local dealerships had a 3-4 month waitlist.
• Prices were higher due to demand.

So I expanded my search and found:

• A dealership about 80 miles away in Pennsylvania.
• A price roughly $2,000 cheaper.

It took extra effort:

• Registering the car myself in New York.
• Getting it inspected.
• Installing front plates.

But it was worth it!

Final Thoughts: Should You Buy New or Used?

If you're asking " should I buy a new or used car?" - here's the simplest answer:

Buy used if:

• You're saving $7,000+.
• The car has low mileage.
• You want the lowest total cost.

Buy new if: 

• Used prices are close to new.
• You plan to keep the car long-term(10+ years)
• You want reliability and warranty coverage.

Bottom Line

For most cars, used is still the better deal.

But for high-demand vehicles like the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid, buying new can actually make more financial sense - especially when used prices are inflated. 

In my case, buying new was the right decision - and I'm confident it will pay off over the long run!
