I'm always ready to move on after the holidays are over. I truly enjoyed the season, especially getting time to see my oldest child who lives on the other side of the state. While it's still hard when he leaves, I'm incredibly proud of the adult he's become and the life he's built for himself. Thankfully, we stay connected with frequent phone calls and catch-ups, which helps ease the transition back to everyday life.
Now that the holidays are behind us, January is here, and reality sets in.
With the next round of college tuition payments coming due for our middle children, it's officially time for No-Spend January in our household. For me, that means spending money only on needs, not wants and being intentional about every dollar.
What is No-Spend January?
A No-Spend January is a personal finance challenge where you limit spending to essentials only- such as groceries, utilities and gas -- while cutting back on unnecessary purchases. It's a great way to reset your budget after the holidays, save money, and start the new year with better financial habits.
How I'm Saving Money This Month
1. Meal Planning to Reduce Grocery Spending
One of the biggest money savers in our home is meal planning. Before shopping, I make a weekly menu and buy only what's needed to prepare those meals. I also take time to check:
- The freezer
- Pantry storage
- Items I already have on hand
2. Using BJ's Coupons Strategically
I needed a few specific items from BJ's Wholesale Club, so before going, I checked the BJ's app for available coupons. That extra step paid off- I was able to stack two current coupons on two different items, and the deals was available for one day only.
While I don't buy many items at BJ's(since prices often aren't better than Aldi or Wegmans), purchasing essentials like Kleenex tissues, Nexxus shampoo, and Vaseline lotion made this trip worthwhile.
3. Skipping the Gym and Choosing Low-Cost Fitness
Instead of paying a monthly gym membership, I joined a year-long hiking challenge group. This challenge only cost $25, making it a very affordable fitness option. It also keeps me motivated to get outside and hike a few miles each week. This challenge is open to anyone, anywhere! All you really need is:
- Good hiking boots. (Frugal hint: Check Ebay for new boots that are discounted.)
- Warm clothing
January hiking! - Microspikes and/or snowshoes if you live in icy conditions.
Final thoughts on Saving Money in January
No-Spend January doesn't mean deprivation- it means intentional choices. Between meal planning, using coupons, and finding affordable ways to stay active, these small changes add up quickly.
If you're easing back into routines after the holidays and facing higher expenses like tuition payments, a no-spend challenge can be a powerful way to regain control of your finances.
